The Real Mr Frankenstein - background information

Product and Publicity
This website advertises a non-fiction investigative biography of Sir Anthony Carlisle. The research for the book has been a fascinating journey, now shared, involving a detective type, iconographic analysis, of 18C art and literature, coupled with detailed searches of 18C and early 19C medical literature, seeking original sources to confirm and support each discovery as it emerged.

The research has uncovered a stunning new view of medical history where truth is verily shown as stranger than fiction; as this ebook assembles together, and logically interprets, historical facts from the 18C and 19C.

Major Discoveries
The major discoveries, and many minor ones, are supported by detailed and contemporary, artistic and literary evidence. The major ones, in order of discovery, are:
- That Carlisle wrote the Gothic novels previously attributed to a Mrs Carver.
- That famous men-midwives and anatomists of the 18C were responsible for many murders of pregnant women to obtain subjects for dissection.
- That Carlisle was the model for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Carlisle was a close friend of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and spent forty years trying to discover the secrets of muscular motion, i.e. to revive life. A cadaver, shown to be Mary's Creature, can even be seen, holding a shroud and rising from the dead, in the background of Carlisle's portrait.
- That William Hogarth's print The Reward of Cruelty depicts William Smellie MD in the process of being dissected by William Hunter MD and John Hunter MD. This being Hogarth's view of the appropriate punishment for Smellie's burking of pregnant women.
- That MMR and IMR statistics show Carlisle was correct to attempt to protect the role of 19C midwives.

  1. Dear Don,

I was thrilled to find out about your book quite by chance. I am a descendant of the Carisle family of County Durham, and found out about the work ot Sir Anthony Carlisle over 15 years ago whilst reaseaching my family tree. As a teacher of A level Biology and Chemistry, I have made sure my students are aware of Anthony Carlisle's work and an article appeared in our local paper in 1994 "teacher's electric shock"! I was born and still live about 5 miles from where Sir Anthony was born.

Anyhow, I look forward to reading your book in full. I wonder whether I could buy a hard copy from anywhere? If not, I shall download the ebook.

    Sincerely

    Dr Richard Spencer MBE

  2. Hello Richard,
At present I regret there is only the ebook version. It is nice to hear from you and would be great to discuss the family history with you. I felt there had to still be some descendants of his brother somewhere. Please email me at collector(at)actrix.co.nz, Kind regards, Don
